INTERNATIONAL PLAYERS SIGN FOR PFAI
Thursday, 03 September 2009 00:00
robbiekeaneThe senior Republic of Ireland international team have continued to support the Professional Footballers' Association of Ireland (PFAI) by once again signing as associate members. Representatives from the PFAI, including General Secretary, Stephen McGuinness and Solicitor Stuart Gilhooly, met with Ireland captain Robbie Keane, goalkeeper Shay Given and defender Kevin Kilbane.

The Union, which represents League of Ireland players, has been particularly prominent in recent years due to continuing financial problems facing the league and contractual problems including unilateral cancellation of contracts encountered by the players.

Robbie Keane said "We are delighted to help our professional colleagues here in Ireland in any way we can.

"Some of the international team started their careers in the League of Ireland and we recognise the importance of the League of Ireland for player development and recognise the great work that the Union does on behalf of the players.   The fact that the PFAI has the full backing of the world players' union, FIFPro, fills us with confidence that the players are getting the best representation available.

"As recent performances in Europe has shown the standard of player in the League of Ireland has improved a lot but it's common knowledge that some players in the League of Ireland have been experiencing payment and contractual difficulties and we'd like them to know that they have our full support.  Clubs should only offer contracts they can fulfil and have to realise that contracts, no matter what league you play in, must be honoured.  It's vital that the Union continues to fight for players' rights."

PFAI General Secretary, Stephen McGuinness said "The continued support of having the international team on board is a great boost for the League of Ireland players and our Association.  The difficulties facing our players have been well documented but it's great to know that the lads are willing to give their time and support to our cause."
