League of Ireland Background

The Football Association of Ireland took control of the running the League of Ireland for the start of the 2007 season. The League is run by League Director, Fran Gavin, the former PFAI General Secretary.

The current set-up of two divisions was introduced in 1986; the Premier Division is made up of ten teams, and the First Division has twelve teams. There is also an ‘A' Championship and the Under-20 League.

Bohemian FC were the League champions in 2009 for the second year in a row; UCD were the first division champions and following the relegation/promotion play-off system, Sporting Fingal were promoted to the premier division.

Following Cork City Football Club been wound up in the High Court the supporters group FORAS formed a new club - Cork City Foras Co-op and they successfully applied for a first division licence.  Following this Bray Wanderers were re-instated to the premier division.  The new Derry City were also granted a first division licence.  Salthill Devon are the latest club to enter the league with Kildare County ending their short history in the League of Ireland after seven seasons in division one.

Airtricity were announced as the new league sponsors one week prior to the start of the 2010 season.
